How I Grew Faster Than a Company to Build a New One
- My Journey with WABAG
I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, with over 35 years of experience spanning multiple industries, including petrochemicals, chemicals, oil & gas, power, paper & pulp, sugar, and water & wastewater treatment projects.

On a bright and sunny day, I stepped into WABAG with a decade of experience in project management, site operations, and design services in the petrochemical, oil, and gas sectors. Despite having no prior knowledge of water and wastewater treatment, I applied for the role of Planning Manager, believing that project management principles remain the same whether one is making a pizza or constructing a plant. My first impression of the company reassured me that I wouldn't just be another drop in the oceanÑI would be a vital stream shaping its course.

From Planning Manager to Head of Planning
In 2003, I began my journey at WABAG as a Manager - Planning, where planning was viewed as a specialized function. However, I saw it differentlyÑI believed planning was a shared responsibility. Selling this idea wasn't easy; it felt like selling ice cream in Alaska, as plans were rarely followed. But with the strong support of Mr. Mittal, I successfully introduced new planning concepts and methodologies.

By 2007, I had grown into the Head of Planning, taking the bold step of recruiting fresh graduates. The industry faced a severe shortage of experienced planners, so I decided to train young minds. By 2009, these recruits had matured into independent professionals, making my role redundantÑan achievement that paved the way for my next challenge.

Stepping into ERP and a Global Role
In 2007, WABAG India made a historic move by acquiring WABAG Austria in a reverse takeover (where the subsidiary buys its parent). This initiated a reunification process, and the management sought specialists to implement ERP systems in India and Europe. I seized this opportunity and was appointed ERP Specialist in 2009. My role involved designing business processes from Business development till Execution of Projects that aligned with corporate governance while enhancing employee efficiency and simplicity.

This position was particularly fulfilling, as it combined innovation, creativity, and the challenge of convincing employees in India and Europe to embrace ERP systems. During this period, I learned a valuable lesson in business:
ÒAlways chase your career, and money will follow you. The reverse is a disaster.Ó
With the successful ERP implementation in India, I was entrusted with expanding the system across Europe, including Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. This international exposure enriched my skills, broadened my perspectives, and significantly enhanced my people management abilities.

Becoming a Part Owner of WABAG
In 2010, WABAG was listed on the Indian Stock Exchange, marking a significant milestone for both the company and its employees. I became a shareholder through the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and when the shares were listed, I earned more than what I had accumulated over the past decade in major international petrochemical firms. That year was truly a financial breakthrough for me.

From ERP to Expanding WABAG
in the Philippines
Eager for a fresh challenge, I approached the management for a new opportunity. RDM proposed an exciting ventureÑexpanding WABAG into the Philippines. Without hesitation, I accepted the role of Country Manager - Philippines in 2011, despite having limited experience in proposals, marketing, and finance. I firmly believed: ÒThe best things come with difficulty, and the worst fears must be faced with grace.Ó

We established WABAG Philippines in April 2011, embarking on a journey fraught with challengesÑnew legal systems, cultural differences, language barriers, and unfamiliar project execution methods. However, with the unwavering support of Top Management, I navigated these obstacles successfully.

Achieving My Dream: Becoming a CEO
In 2012, I was honoured with the title of CEO/Director of WABAG Philippines, making it the most memorable day of my career. I vividly recall setting my Key Performance Appraisal (KPA) goal early on: I wanted to become a CEO within ten years. That dream became a reality. Presently I am CEO of VATECH WABAG Singapore also.

A Company That Grows Its People
None of my accomplishments would have been possible without WABAG's leadership, which prioritizes employee growth and nurtures talent. The management team has always been approachable, supportive, and committed to standing by employees through both triumphs and trials.

In just ten years, I ascended from Manager to CEO, and the ESOPs further secured my financial future, transforming me into a millionaire.
