Motion Control Products Limited - Electronics
“My name is Stephen McKay, and I am Managing Director of Motion Control Products Limited in Bournemouth, a company which I started in 1994. My initial goal when starting the company was to provide a technical ‘one stop shop’ for machinery manufacturers who required a range of control system products to automate the machines that they supply to in their respective market, with the aim of giving them the edge with the latest technology from one source. Calling on my years within previous roles such as company management and technical sales, it was incredibly fulfilling to see my goal come to life and grow from strength to strength.”
Can you share anything about developments currently underway at the firm?
As we have been in the industry for such a long time, we have gained valuable experience in applying our products into a host of markets, including automation, aerospace, defence and healthcare, to name a few. As such, we are able to apply this knowledge from within the company and from our partners to give our customers what they want to make them competitive within their industries.
We have focused on employing only the best and most skilled engineers to support the company and our customers whilst also enabling opportunities for young people to get involved in the world of STEM. Currently we have two apprentices and we only see this increasing in the future – not only that but through targeted recruitment and marketing we have doubled the number of women within the company, which is a great achievement considering the gap in STEM sectors.
I have deliberately ensured that no matter our reach, which currently is pretty global, the company has maintained the family-run feel. This has only strengthened the loyalty and wellbeing of my employees, which are the heart of our success story.
How are you working to stay ahead of your competition?
We have continued to invest in our infrastructure and technology by implementing several new systems and processes that have helped to streamline our operations and make them more efficient. This has allowed us to reduce our costs and increase our profitability. During the pandemic I realised that we needed to be confident and more prolific in the digital age in reaching out to our customers, partners and target audiences. I decided to heavily invest in the onsite Motion Studio. This studio means we can offer high quality marketing videos, podcasts, educational content and showcase our products to our customers whilst the interactivity engages us with larger audiences. The studio is also available to the local community to develop their online presence, too.
We have developed a number of new products within the company to keep us ‘ahead of the curve’ by assisting our growth and customer satisfaction, which is one of the keys to our success. I am also the owner of a company called RIFT Group, which sits alongside Motion Control Products and enhances the services and products we can supply. The teams at both sites are continuously sharing ideas and product developments and I am looking forward to seeing RIFT be just as successful as Motion Control Products.
After heavily investing in training our staff, increasing our core technology to reach out to our customers and improving our customer service, being recognised for this award means that we are doing things proactively to achieve our goals.
