Since then QC has conducted analyses and developed business cases for the large investment projects of QC’s subsidiaries, as per the new QC Investment Committee policy. Furthermore, in accordance with the new Investment Committee Policy, QC is reviewing the QC joint-venture structure to ensure uniformity and compliance with QC’s standards/objectives and contractual agreements. Partnerships and Joint- Ventures Development During the past 7 years, under Harry Flaherty’s direction, QC developed 6 new Inuit-owned joint-ventures and created partnerships inorderto increase its business development, increase its exposure and to get prepared to be involved in large projects that will be important for Nunavut. QC has been present in sectors of Marine Transportation (QC/ NSSI), Aviation (Qikiqtani First Aviation Ltd), Marine Services (Tulaktarvik), Construction (QC-Kiewit Constructors ULC), Security Services (QC-Scarlet) and Medical Services (Qikiqtaaluk Medical Corporation). As an example, Security Services Inc. has grown from revenue of $105,000 in the first year of operations to $1.7 million in revenue in the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Contracts included continued agreements with Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (at Mary River and Milne Inlet) and with EllisDon Corporation for security services at Canadian High Arctic Research Station Project in Cambridge Bay, NU. The QC President has also been actively creating partnerships in order to bring QC into the following economic sectors: Hydro-Electricity; Oil and Gas (ongoing); 3G Cellular and VOIP Phone Service (2013); First P3 Construction ofQC into the following economic sectors: Hydro-Electricity; Oil and Gas (ongoing); 3G Cellular and VOIP Phone Service (2013); First P3 Construction of a Deep-water Facility in Rankin Inlet (2012). On-going Development After the construction Allavvik, a new $ 9 M, 34,500 sq. ft. commercial building in Iqaluit at the Inuksugait Complex, inaugurated in 2012, QC and its subsidiaries launched a new series of infrastructure projects, including: Hotel and Conference Centre Located on a parcel of Inuit Owned Land, the Hotel and Conference Centre is intended to be future business hub in Iqaluit. The Hotel and Conference Centre will be the best place to stay and conduct business in Nunavut, with high-class and fully-equipped guest suites, skilled and motivated staffs delivering quality services, and warm and inviting atmosphere inspired by northern landscape, Inuit tradition and local arts. Furthermore, the new construction is looking to promote ecofriendly objectives: the Hotel and Conference Centre will be designed and constructed with the intention of being a high performance facility with low environmental impact. The project will also enhance the use of renewable energy sources to improve energy efficiency. The grand opening is foreseen for 2019. Marine Infrastructure The QC Fisheries Division has had commendable growth since its creation and is a major player in the Canadian shellfish and groundfish industries. QC recognizes that Nunavut could build a strong marine-based economy if the foundational infrastructure were built. QC has been an strong advocate for the development of marine infrastructure in Nunavut. QC has actively been working with the Hamlet of Qikiqtarjuaq to seek funding to advance a deep-sea port in Qikiqtarjuaq. Iqaluit Waste Management Project QC, through its joint venture corporation Qikiqtaaluk Environmental, is developing a partnership with the City of Iqaluit and key private actors to further develop and increase the waste management and recycling capabilities in Iqaluit. As a first step, the group of partners is working toward the development of a sustainable model for the new landfill area in addition to the construction of a waste sorting center and recycling facility to ensure proper solid waste management. The project aims at ensuring a more efficient and sustainable waste management system that increases the protection of the environment by facilitating the reuse of materials and the proper disposal of waste.
